Fourth Ten: Announced by Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL

The time of announcements from the world's largest manufacturers overtakes the IT world as a large ocean wave. We, as real surfers, were able to climb up to its very crest and on the first day of the MWC 2015 (mobile congress, held these days in Barcelona) we already presented two new products - the future bestseller Microsoft Lumia 640 and its larger brother Microsoft Lumia 640 XL .



Both models are running the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system with the Lumia Denim update. It is important to note that these devices will be upgraded to Windows 10 , which will be released later this year.

Lumia 640 and 640 XL got IPS HD-displays with a diagonal of 5 and 5.7 inches, respectively - which is quite at the level of the current flagships of competitors. Despite the different sizes, the resolution of each of them is 1280 × 720 pixels, but the pixel density, as you might have guessed, is different: 294 PPI for the standard model and 259 PPI for the XL version. Other distinctive features of the XL version include a 13 megapixel main camera with ZEISS optics and a 5 megapixel front camera. In the Lumia 640, a more modest set of cameras - the main one with an 8-megapixel sensor and a front-facing 1-megapixel one. However, there, and there is autofocus and LED-flash.

As for the other technical characteristics, here the models are similar as twin brothers. In the arsenal of smartphones quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz, 1 GB of RAM. 8 GB of internal storage can be expanded to an aggregate 136 GB with a micro SD card. Do not forget about the terabyte cloud storage OneDrive. But more on that later.
Taking into account the fact that Windows 8.1 with the Lumia Denim update is optimized even for the most modest smartphones in performance, applications with such hardware will be guaranteed to work smoothly, and the games will have good graphics and no brakes. By the way, about the operating system: as we have already mentioned, both smartphones will be updated to Windows 10 , which will be available later this year. The current version called Lumia Denim has received support for folders on the main screen, a feature called “Application Corner”, support for aptX, improved messaging and much more. So, the promised cherry on the cake is a pre-installed set of Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote. Moreover, with the purchase of one of the presented devices, users will be provided with a free annual subscription to "Office 365 Personal" with the ability to install one desktop application (PC / Mac) and one additional mobile application for a smartphone or tablet (Windows, iPad or Android).

The subscription includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage and the ability to make Skype calls to landlines in more than 60 countries and mobile phones in eight countries, with a total duration of 60 minutes per month. But even without a subscription, the OneDrive free storage volume is still impressive: by default, 15 GB of data is completely free for users, and activating the mode of automatically downloading images from the camera increases the size of the “cloud” by another 15 GB.

A bit about dimensions and batteries: despite the fact that both models boast a rather thin case (9 mm or less), the battery capacity is good - 3000 mAh in Lumia 640 XL and 2500 mAh in Lumia 640. For lovers we will not forget to tell exact figures the overall dimensions and weight of devices:
141.3 × 72.2 × 8.85 mm, 144 grams - Microsoft Lumia 640,
157.9 × 81.5 × 9 mm, 171 grams - Microsoft Lumia 640 XL.

As for the design, then everything is done in the spirit of the latest traditions of Lumia, where bright colors are organically combined with minimalism of forms. There are still two connectors - 3.5 mm audio and USB, and all the other slots are hidden under a removable cover.

Speaking of lids: they will be presented in the current palette of Lumia smartphones. Smartphones will be available in blue, orange, white or black. The only difference between the younger and older models is the texture of the case. The Lumia 640 will delight users of a two-layer glossy case (except for the black version, which will be matte), and all the Lumia 640 XL will be extremely matte.

New items will go on sale in the world later in March in several versions. Lumia 640 will be the first model with support for high-speed connection LTE / 4G and the ability to work with two SIM cards. Also in Russia will be available Lumia 640 LTE with one SIM card and the Lumia 640 3G option with two SIM cards.

The model Lumia 640 XL will be available in two versions: with support for one SIM card and with support for two SIM cards and Smart Dual SIM technology.

The cost and time of appearance of devices in Russia will be announced later, but for now we can say that the European prices for Lumia 640 XL will be 189 euros for the 3G version and 219 euros for the 4G / LTE version, excluding taxes and subsidies.
