Vertical Farm Vertical Harvest size 9 * 45m will allow to grow tons of vegetables
The town of Jackson is famous for its harsh winters. Accordingly, it is quite difficult to grow vegetables and fruits, so the city has to start all this from other regions. Nevertheless, a three-level vertical hydroponic greenhouse Vertical Harvest may soon appear in the city, which will be able to cover the city’s need for some vegetables.
The authors of the project, Nona Yahya and Penny McBridge, are going to build an additional structure adjacent to the parking lot. According to them, the cost of growing products in such a greenhouse will be lower than the purchase price of vegetables imported to the city. All this becomes possible thanks to a new method of growing plants. ')
Thus, the plants will be planted on special rotating platforms, so that each plant will receive an equal amount of sunlight (transparent greenhouse) during daylight, sufficient for normal growth and fruiting. This method will provide savings - plan to use artificial light to a minimum.
The upper tier of the "vertical farm" will be designed for mature plants that will bear fruit. Such plants require the maximum amount of sunlight. Due to the new type of construction, a vertical farm will be able to produce about 20 tons of tomatoes, 2 tons of spicy herbs, about 17 tons of green plants (lettuce, etc.).
The total area of the farm is 9 * 45 meters; the authors of the project claim that the vegetables will be grown as much as can be grown on 23 acres of ordinary land. In this case, 90% less water will be used and 100% less pesticides (it is probably meant that almost no pesticides will be used) than with the traditional method of growing vegetables.
It is worth noting that this project received partial funding in the amount of 36 thousand US dollars on Kickstarter in 2013. Another part of the investment will provide the town authorities.
