Truly wireless headphones with Near Field Magnetic Induction technology

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which will be held from 2 to 5 March, NXP Semiconductors will present the NFMI (Near Field Magnetic Induction) magnetic induction technology in wireless headphones that do not actually require wires.

The wires from the headphones interfere during sports and cling to clothes. There are wireless headphones, but even they have a wire or a hard case to connect the two ears. This is necessary because modern data transmission technology in the 2.4 GHz band (Bluetooth) does not allow streaming audio to two different ears at the same time - the human body absorbs the signal.

NXP Semiconductors decided to eliminate this problem using NFMI short-range magnetic induction technology. Headphones are based on the NXH2280 single-chip radio transmitter. The device consumes 1.5 milliwatts, and the maximum bitrate is 596kbps. The technology creates a private network, making the headphones less susceptible to interference than using Bluetooth 2.4 GHz. The delay time does not exceed five milliseconds.

There is only one requirement: the distance between the ears should not be more than one meter.
