Barbie: spy doll for your child

The times of teddy bears with a camera in the nose have passed - they were replaced by more high-tech toys with advanced functionality. Barbie, who will turn 56 this March, taught us to take pictures, talk to the child, record conversations and send conversation topics to parents.

Hello Barbie is equipped with a Wi-Fi module, a microphone, a speaker and an integrated computer. The toy works without recharging for an hour. To answer the child a question, she sends the recording to the ToyTalk server, where it is processed to answer. The service records and saves questions to improve the algorithms. Parents can allow or deny certain topics for conversation and personalize the doll by adding additional information — for example, the name of the pet.

If the smart TV from Samsung has caused such a resonance, then Barbie from ToyTalk should also cause concern to privacy advocates. Parents should use ToyTalk's service policy before using the toy, which assumes that the toy can take photographs, audio and video recordings of interaction with the child, use and store this information in order to improve the quality of service.

Access to these records will be available to parents and with their permission - third parties. The head of ToyTalk warns parents that they can hear extremely impartial things about themselves - because children can be honest with toys.

A new doll Hello Barbie with spy elements was developed by ToyTalk startup , which received thirty one million dollars from venture funds of Greylock Partners, Charles River Ventures, Khosla Ventures, True Ventures, First Round Capital and business angels. The doll will be on sale by next Christmas, the estimated price is seventy-five dollars.

This year IBM has joined the creation of “smart” toys for children. The CogniToys project involves teaching children using toys connected to the IBM Watson supercomputer. The cute crocodile initiates conversations on various topics and thus develops the child. You can contribute to Kickstarter .
