The INION books damaged by the fire will be restored by drying in cryochambers

As previously reported, at the end of January in Moscow, the library of the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences caught fire. Then, more than 2,000 square meters burned out, which resulted in damage to more than 15% of the funds (both during the fire itself and because of the fire extinguishing with water). According to the library itself, a total of about 5 million books were lost , including unique rare editions.

Fortunately, some affected books can be recovered. Director of the Russian State Library, Alexander Visly, believes that the best solution is freezing and drying in cryochambers. “Now the best thing would be to immerse all the books from INION and take them to an ice cave in the Arctic, because to save them they need to be frozen at a temperature of -20-30 degrees. The worst thing is that now the warming has begun, this is for the affected books - death. The question of placing books in the cold storage is being worked out, the first batches are already being taken away, ” said Wisly .

It is worth noting that earlier the head of the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations (FANO), Mikhail Kotyukov, said that the restoration of the INION books using the methods used in Russia will take more than 150 years. “If we use the opportunities that exist in the country, we will recover 154 years,” Kotyukov said.

Nevertheless, on February 21 it became known that damaged books would be restored in the cryochamber of the Russian State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation. This method will be tested on a test batch of books with a total weight of one and a half tons. Now scientists are planning how the drying process will take place. “First of all, you need to decide in which form it is better to freeze the books: should they be laid out separately, which requires additional efforts and time, or you can leave them in a packed form, that is, in special plastic ventilated boxes,” said the head of the library INION Victor Glukhov. In the cryochamber can be dried about three tons of books at the same time. And the drying process itself takes place in a vacuum at low temperatures.

Of all the books affected by water, it will be difficult to recover about 15%, but this problem is solved, since there are copies of such books in libraries in other countries - the USA, France, and Germany.
