Lasers to increase engine performance

I offer readers Geektimes translation of the article
"Lasers set to engines in running more efficiently" from the journal New scientist.

“Piiu, Piiu, Piiu” (edit thanks to leorush ). All week last November, the laboratory near Chicago was checked by an internal combustion engine. What kind of experiment? Ignition in this particular engine was made not by a spark plug, but by a laser, which resulted in more efficient fuel combustion than usual. Engines with ignition lasers can produce cleaner, greener cars.

In a conventional internal combustion engine, a mixture of fuel and air is fed into the combustion chamber, where it is ignited with a spark from a spark plug. Hot, expanding gases from burning (edited thanks to EndUser ) fuel then transfer force to moving parts, such as a piston - producing mechanical energy, which then, for example, can be used to turn the wheels. But due to the fact that the combustion cycle occurs very quickly, it is difficult to burn the entire fuel mixture. The problem is that a spark plug can burn fuel only at one end of the combustion chamber, says Chuni Ghosh, CEO of Princeton (edited by EndUser ) Optronics, located in New Jersey, is a company developing a new ignition system.

In a gosh engine, a laser ignites fuel in the middle of the combustion chamber, thus burning more fuel and improving combustion efficiency by 27 percent. For example, laser ignition can improve the fuel efficiency of a car from 40 kilometers per liter to about 50 kilometers. More complete combustion also reduces pollution by co-products, such as nitrogen dioxide.

Lasers are also better at engine operating times of thousands of cycles per minute. They can be tuned more accurately than spark plugs, so that ignition occurs at the best moment in time. You can emit multiple laser beams during the same cycle in different parts of the cylinder to increase fuel combustion.

This engine was presented for the first time to meetings of the Office of Advanced Planning for Research and Development - Energy (ARPA-e energy innovation summit) last week in Washington DC. The idea itself is not new, but Princeton Optronix first showed that it works on a real engine, with heat and extreme efforts that produce thousands of rotations per minute. Toyota was fun with such systems in 2011, but never tested in such conditions.

Cars are not the only devices that can be improved. You can also benefit from backup generators and ship engines. “Shipping companies are under great pressure to reduce pollution from ships,” says Ghosh. "One shipping company with which we are discussing this issue is interested in setting up existing engines for laser ignition."
