3D sound algorithm from a hearing aid company

For a long time, I was interested in the question: why all these gadgets and bells and whistles with a large number of sound tracks (Surround systems), if a person has only 2 ears and all these N channels you want-not-want are just 2 - the left and right ear =) Let's try to figure out how with the help of 2 audio tracks can get 3D sound.

What is the first thought that comes to mind? That's right - take 2 microphones and place them at the level of human ears. In order to preserve the purity of the imitation of the human head, some other object between the ears is necessary for the sound absorption properties of the human head. Congratulations, we already got the head of the average student! This recording method is called a binaural recording (google). The trick here is that the entire surround sound is built by the brain itself, as if the listener was in place of recording instead of mannequin. Several records made with this technology can be found here . Such records can only be listened to with headphones, since otherwise, each person’s ear will hear not only “his” path, but also his neighbor’s path. As a result, the entire effect disappears.

Starkey went even further by developing an algorithm that emulates the human ear and erasing the barrier between the human ear and the earpiece speaker. Now the sounds, as it were, do not sit in the head, but go outside. The algorithm is called Cetera . Here is a stunning example of this algorithm, which shows how realistic the sounds are (listen to everyone! Only in headphones! It is advisable to close your eyes)

Shl. Together with the technology of 3D video, you can already fantasize about the video camera of the future, although this is probably a topic for the next topic (:
