Robotic car for the first time bypassed human racer
Computer control systems of the car develop, improve. Every month such systems become more and more functional. And now the system, developed by a group of engineers at Stanford, has emerged victorious in competition with man. Audi TTS cars participated in the races - one with an automatic control system, the other - under the control of a professional racer. Maximum speed - 200 kilometers per hour.
As a result, the robotic car came out the winner , however, the advantage was very small - only 0.4 seconds. In order to train their system in the skills of professional racers, the researchers did a lot of work with professional drivers. Scientists even used electrodes attached to a person’s head to study brain activity while performing various maneuvers on the road. The result is a computer system that can do everything that professional drivers are capable of. According to the developers, after 15 years, cars with Schumacher skills will drive the cars, while the cars will be used for normal purposes - for example, to take the child out of school. ')
In the process of researching the brain activity of drivers while driving, scientists were surprised by the fact that on more difficult sections of the road, professional drivers practically did not think, most of the maneuvers were conducted on reflexes and “muscle memory”. And some elements of the study were successfully used in teaching autonomous control systems. In particular, the problem of sliding while cutting corners at high speed was solved. Most drivers reacted to the problem before it appeared, as a result, the car fits perfectly into the turn. Up to this point, the developers have tried to create a reliable algorithm that allows the car to react in the same way as a professional racer reacts to such a situation. But the algorithm failed, the problem could not be solved. Only after replacing part of the algorithm with a set of automatic commands, did the robotized car begin to turn normally at high speed.
In the future, according to experts, it will be possible to create a system that will drive a car at the level of world-class racers, if necessary. As mentioned above, it will be equivalent to the fact that Schumacher is taking you to the dentist or to work, as a personal driver.
