Two years after the fall, the weight of the main fragment of the Chelyabinsk meteorite was 503.33 kg

The largest fragment of the meteorite "Chelyabinsk", located in the regional museum of the region, was weighed on high-precision electronic scales. Three weighings were carried out, the arithmetic average of the results of which amounted to 503 kilograms with twelve triples after the decimal point. Weight decreased by 1.6 kg compared with the data on January 26.

The meteorite fell to Earth on February 15, 2013.

The Chelyabinsk meteorite fell to Earth in February 2013, causing explosions in the atmosphere and the fall of fragments on the territory of the Chelyabinsk Region. The blast wave affected 1147 people, including 259 children. A cloud of ten thousand tons of pollutants - compounds of iron, silicon, aluminum, magnesium and others - circled the planet several times.

Scientists are trying to find answers to two main questions: what is the nature of dark spots and stripes in a meteorite, and what events preceded its fall. In 2018 in Moscow, for the first time in 80 years, the International Meteor Society will take place, during which they will conduct an excursion to the places of fall and storage of the Chelyabinsk meteorite.

More than four hundred videotapes made by car DVRs and surveillance cameras collected 138 million views in the first 72 hours.

Large fragments were raised in October 2013 from the bottom of Lake Chebarkul. The first weighing of the largest fragment was made on automobile scales, which broke during the procedure. The result, according to witnesses, was 654 kilograms. Later, a 100 kilogram piece broke off from the fragment and the moisture evaporated. On February 9, 2015, the meteorite was weighed on a high-precision electronic scale with a carrying capacity of 10 tons, the average result after three weighings was 503.333333333333 kilograms. In the future, the weight of "Chelyabinsk" will change : the evaporation of moisture can cause its decrease, and oxidation in the object - an increase.
