"Button of death" has reduced the theft of smartphones

Last year, California passed a law under which mobile devices must be equipped with a "death button" - a function that allows you to remotely delete all data in case of theft. This feature is in all Android devices, starting with 5.0 Lollipop. In September 2013, this “button” equipped its Apple devices.

Kill Switch has reduced the iPhone theft in San Francisco by 40 percent and by 40 percent theft of all smartphones in London.

In California, where the “button of death” has been in effect since last year, the manufacturers of smartphones equip all gadgets with software with the ability to deactivate and delete data remotely. San Francisco County Prosecutor George Gascon is confident that such a “button” is one of the most important technologies for mobile devices.

Industry creates complex applications, but preventing theft and robbery of its consumers is the best technology on the market.

According to the National Consumer League, in 2012, smartphones and tablets were stolen from 1.6 million Americans. In California, the number of thefts of smartphones is half of all crimes in San Francisco, Oakland and other cities. The introduction of the "button of death" by Apple, Samsung and Google has made it possible to correct this situation. In London, thefts were reduced by 40%, in San Francisco - by 22%, in New York - by 16%.

But not all “kill switches” devices are enabled by default, and therefore experts are calling on developers in default settings to enable remote deactivation, as Apple did.
