It is well known that when working servers, especially powerful, emit a lot of heat. And in a data center with thousands of servers of heat - a huge amount, and it has to be removed from the equipment. Various methods are used for this, but heat, in most cases, is wasted. However, in some cases, thermal energy is still utilized, and is used for useful purposes.
This is the case with the Yandex data center, which operates in the Finnish city of Mäntsälä. The Russian company has
entered into an agreement with the local energy company Mäntsälän Sähkö, according to which the heat from the Yandex data center will be used to heat buildings in this locality.
According to the portal Tekniikka & Talous, the heat generated by the data center is enough to heat 5,000 households that are connected to the central heating system. As for the heating infrastructure, it will deal with the company Calefa, operating in the city of Hollola. Representatives of this company claim that their technology, which makes it possible to use the heat of a data center to heat homes, is currently the only one of its kind.

Finnish experts argue that this heat can be used as an alternative to thermal energy obtained from the work of local CHP plants currently operating on Russian natural gas. Such a replacement will significantly reduce the level of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
Unfortunately, the economic indicators of such a project are not given - it is not yet clear how expensive thermal energy will be for the end user, and how much heat from the data center is cheaper or more expensive than the heat generated by burning natural gas.
It is worth noting that Yandex acquired a plot of land in Mäntsälä in 2013 for 1.5 million euros. The total land area is 8 hectares.
