One of the most active forks of the
Popcorn Time project,
popcorn-time.se , thought about switching to the i2p network. Last summer, the project, taking care of the anonymity of its users, the project began to provide them with a free VPN embedded in the application. However, by now the capabilities of the VPN provider have already been exhausted due to the high popularity of the project.
As the project team
commented on its current state: “The user base has grown so fast, and continues to grow, that we do not have time. Now only a small part of our users can use VPN at the same time. While we are taking the first steps, we are testing the ability to build in i2p support. ”
The developers of Popcorn Time are counting on supporting their i2p development with the help of their large user base and thus increasing the data transfer rate for it for all its participants, including its users. In addition to the transfer of films, it is planned to distribute software updates through p2p networks due to the vulnerability of the system with one central server.

The
i2p network has been around for more than 10 years, but has not yet received wide public acceptance, such as Tor. Unlike the latter, it does not seek to be an anonymizer for visiting ordinary sites. Instead, the network aims to set up hidden services within itself. In addition, unlike Tor, i2p is fundamentally designed to transfer large amounts of data. In particular, file sharing is already functioning on the network.
Popcorn Time - a project that has released an application that allows you to watch movies for free directly from torrents. After a short success, the project was abandoned due to complaints from the MPAA. But immediately after this, several forks separated from the project.
