Police in the United States provide site premises for the safe exchange of goods for online ads

The police of the city of Columbia, Missouri, from the end of January, provides citizens with free access to the lounges and lobbies of police stations. In them, it will be possible to exchange goods for transactions concluded on private ad sites and social networks. The halls are open around the clock, seven days a week, equipped with cameras and are under the supervision of law enforcement officers. A similar practice was introduced in Virginia Beach , East Chicago and Boca Raton.

Scammers often use private ad sites and social networks to search for victims. They can sell goods that do not correspond to the description or, on the contrary, pay off with sellers with counterfeit money. They can sell stolen goods or rob a counterparty at the time of the exchange. Between 2009 and 2014, 45 craigslist kills have occurred. Security professionals give advice to visitors of such resources:

  1. Do not go to the meeting alone.
  2. Meet in crowded places.
  3. Make sure that someone else knows where you are going and that you will be able to communicate with this person during the transaction.
  4. Look for the seller in the network.
  5. Do not let yourself be driven into a corner. If you need to go to someone's home, make sure your friend stays outside.
  6. How to meet - take a photo of the contractor with his driver's license and give it to your authorized person.
  7. Use the sixth sense. Are you uncomfortable? Go away

Several items from the list are performed automatically if the exchange takes place at the police station premises under the supervision of cameras and police officers. The possibility of meeting in the area allows you to protect users and weed out the criminals before the conclusion of the transaction: professional fraudsters will not "shine" under the cameras and risk being caught at the crime scene.

The annual budget of the Colombian Police Department is $ 19 million. The number of crimes in 2014 amounted to 5,124, an average of one investigation costs $ 3,700. The cost of complex cases, taking into account working time, examinations and other costs can be tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Providing free of charge premises for safe exchanges, the police may well save money.
