Apple will build a data center for $ 2 billion

Apple plans to spend $ 2 billion on refitting the sapphire glass plant into a data center, reports Bloomberg.

The building is located in Mesa (Arizona). With an area of 121,000 m 2, it will become the largest data center of Apple. And probably one of the largest data centers in the world.

Apple says the data center will run entirely on renewable energy. For the local economy, this is also a good thing: the company plans to employ 150 employees, and another 300-500 people will be temporarily employed in construction and related projects. “The multi-billion dollar project is one of the biggest investments we have ever made,” Apple said.

True, if we recall the sapphire glass factory, then we have to state an obvious failure. Apple was never able to set up production, and in fact the plant planned to employ 2,000 people, that is, an order of magnitude more than it would be in the data center. Probably, the authorities of Arizona were very disappointed with this turn of events.

The sapphire glass factory Apple was going to build in collaboration with GT Advanced Technologies. But later it turned out that GT Advanced Technologies was not able to start producing such a large amount of products, and soon the company went bankrupt (after receiving $ 578 million in debt from Apple in November 2013). But the plant could become one of the key elements in the supply chain components. Located in the USA, it had to provide enough glass for all Apple gadgets.

One way or another, but Apple’s additional data center doesn’t hurt either.
