How will NASA use Microsoft HoloLens to explore Mars?

At the time of the announcement of the new points of augmented reality from Microsoft, the developers announced that the system will be used in NASA to improve the effectiveness of studying Mars. How are scientists going to use the device, and why exactly for the study of Mars?

Now this moment has become more or less clear: the combined NASA and Microsoft team will create a special software platform OnSight . This project has already begun to be implemented by NASA at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, USA.

The software will process data from the Curiosity rover in such a way that scientists with HoloLens glasses will be able to see a stereoscopic picture of the surface of Mars, similar to the landscape that the rover "sees". According to experts, this virtual reality will help scientists directly see everything that shows Curiosity, and the images will be optimized so that a person feels like he is in the exact place that is now shown in glasses.

Scientists will see Mars just as they would see it if they themselves were on the Red Planet. This can improve the performance of the Curiosity team. In addition, the rover "teach" to understand the gestures that scientists will use, it will also be possible to "manually" mark places on Mars that experts would like to examine in more detail. The Curiosity team will be able to jointly inspect places of interest on Mars, thus carrying out teamwork in HoloLens glasses.

The images that scientists can see with glasses will already have data on distances, sizes, some properties of objects visible in the photo.

According to the plans, the OnSight system should be ready by the end of 2015, and then its active testing will begin.
