Automakers fake engine sounds

For many years, automakers have sought as much as possible the quiet operation of the engine. Now we have to solve the opposite problem. For electric cars generate fake sounds through hidden speakers. Manufacturers of cars on gasoline give solidity to the internal combustion engine, which has also become too quiet, not inspiring any respect.

The problem arose more than five years ago with the advent of the first electric cars. Too quiet, their work has caused concern for road safety experts. In the United States, it was decided at the legislative level to oblige manufacturers to install speakers so that cars moving at low speed would emit a motor sound (at high speed this makes little sense, because there is no difference whether a pedestrian is facing a car before death or not).

The developers immediately showed imagination. For example, the creators of the hybrid car Fisker Karma (2011-2012) supplied the car with a futuristic sound, something average between the sound of a spaceship and a Formula 1 car. The Nissan company invited experts from Hollywood to equip the Leaf hybrid with the sound of a car from the cult film "Blade Runner".

Other manufacturers followed the example of electric cars, writes The Washington Post. It turns out that almost all popular sedans and pickups engine sound carefully tuned using special tubes or in a digital way, and this infuriates motorists.

The fake sound of the engine has become one of the dirty little secrets of the auto industry. Manufacturers are afraid that if you let people hear the harsh rustle of a real engine, then many people will refuse to buy a car in favor of a more “serious” model that roars with a confident bass.

Customer surveys have clearly shown that people want two incompatible things: 1) an efficient, cost-effective engine; 2) the classic sound of the engine. Therefore, we have to look for compromises.

For example, the quiet model 2015 Mustang EcoBoost is equipped with an Active Noise Control system, which amplifies the sound of the engine through the speakers in the car. At the same time, Ford has consulted on the forums of motorists, which particular “sound concept” looks more attractive to them.

Volkswagen to enhance the sound of the engine uses a special column called Soundaktor. Lexus has hired a Yamaha sound engineer to adjust the interior design and enhance the sound of the engine in the driver's seat. Porsche uses sound tubes to transmit engine sound to the cab. BMW plays samples through the speakers in the cabin, changing them depending on the current engine speed.

The 2015 Mustang EcoBoost ad says that the sound of a vintage V-8 engine “was long considered a mating call of Mustang, but the new sound processing and amplification system is“ sporty and energetic, ”provides“ more graceful growl "and" low-frequency feeling of omnipotence. "

Judging by the marketing techniques of companies, it seems that for many people a car is more than just a vehicle.
