Intel: computers need sense organs

Intel believes that in the future, Artificial Intelligence will become a constant companion and human assistant: mobile computers will understand human behavior and environment, recognize the people around them and the terrain. Accordingly, a distributed mind can help a person every second, give hints and make his actions more effective. About how Intel sees (and creates) our future, said Andrew Chen, director of Intel Research, at the opening of the IDF in San Francisco.

The logic of the developers is quite clear. Mobile devices are becoming even smaller, and their computing power is growing, while they can all share information. All the pieces of the puzzle to create a single system form a whole before our eyes. Only one key element is missing - sensors. It is the sensors that should fulfill the role of those sense organs that the Artificial Intelligence needs in order to perceive objects in the offline world. When this happens, mobile computers will be able to respond quickly to what is happening around the person and give him hints about what is important to him.

Now Intel is actively working in those areas in which we are still very far from the goal. This speech recognition, pattern recognition, energy efficiency of mobile devices. However, the cyberpunk future is already clearly visible and computer corporations will try to bring it to life. By the way, Intel representatives said that they are closely following the development of virtual worlds, such as Second Life (there are now more than 2,000 virtual worlds in the world). Perhaps in the future they will become a standard part of computer interfaces.

What can play the role of "sense organs" for a computer? Much. for example, a GPS system may report the user's current location and direction of travel. The camcorder can constantly shoot and recognize the surrounding objects (Intel has already achieved 75-90% recognition accuracy on seven objects). A voice analysis system that works continuously and imperceptibly can recognize emotions.

Since such a system is focused on the daily life of a person, it is possible to severely limit the base of recognizable objects, since a person is always in the same environment. Much more energy efficiency issues. Intel engineers set the task to wearable camcorders and so on. equipment consumed no more than 1 watt.
