GLONASS ground equipment will be installed at three stations in Antarctica

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin recently publicly outraged by the US refusal to deploy ground-based equipment for GLONASS, which allows to increase the accuracy of the system. The refusal of the Federal Communications Agency is reasoned by the fact that the Russian system does not have licenses for the transmission of a radio signal (section 301 of the Communications Act 1984). The unofficial reason for the ban is the fact that it is a dual-use system that can be used for military purposes, for example, for accurate missile targeting.

However, the refusal of Americans does not prevent to install ground equipment in other places. So, in the next Antarctic summer, metal containers with new ground-based equipment of the GLONASS system will be installed on the foundations of three stations in Antarctica , reports TASS.

Work on the construction of the foundation and flyover has already begun at Novolazarevskaya station.

“This year, such works will be performed by employees of Roskosmos and the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute of Roshydromet at three stations. They have already begun at Novolazarevskaya, later they will be implemented at Progress and the East, ”a correspondent reported. TASS Head of the Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE) Valery Lukin.

At present, the station of the system for differential correction and monitoring of GLONASS is already operating at the Antarctic Bellingshausen station.

The GLONASS system determines the location of the object with an accuracy of 2.8 meters. This year, the accuracy is planned to be increased to 1.4 meters, in 2020 - up to 60 cm , in the future - up to 10 centimeters.

Well, about the refusal of the US to place the paramilitary equipment of Russia on their territory, it was entrusted to Roscosmos and the non-profit partnership GLONASS until March 2015. They will provide the Foreign Ministry with data on unfair practices in the field of navigation in the United States, which Russia intends to submit to the UN Space Committee.
