Having serious problems with the law in the United States, Kim Dotcom, currently in New Zealand, announced on
Twitter that he plans to release a protected (with full encryption) browser chat with video call support and file transfer in the near future. The name of the new Dotcom project is MegaChat, and according to the owner, this should put an end to Skype.
Dotcom himself explains the need for his development by the fact that Skype, being provided with American infrastructure, cannot be trusted in terms of privacy; moreover, Dotcom, referring to Julian Assange and Edward Snowden, says that “they [the Skype developers] have no choice and must provide backdoors” so that the US government can listen to conversations and chats when necessary. Previously, he argued that the NSA was illegally following him and his family using the Echelon system.
Last year, Dotcom
promised to provide a protected instant messenger and email for users of its Mega file sharing service, but the release has not yet occurred.
About a month ago, as previously
reported , pursued by the FBI. Dotcom told reporters that protection from prosecution cost him a fortune - he declared himself ruined and dismissed a law firm that dealt with his extradition to the United States. However, the next court hearings on this matter were postponed by the court until February of the following year.
