Probe filmed a video of the inhabitants of the subglacial Antarctic seas

Despite the cold, life in the polar seas simply boils. However, now scientists were able to study only a small number of subglacial regions of the polar regions of the Earth. Huge areas still remain unexplored. But the white spots on the maps of researchers are gradually tightening, thanks to new research and new technologies.

Recently, American scientists submitted a recording made by a special ice-probe. Experts in December last year were able to launch a probe under the ice, in the Ross Sea, which took pictures of the life of the inhabitants of the region, and then transferred all the recorded data to the surface. By the way, engineers believe that about the same probes will be used to search for life on other planets and satellites that are covered with a layer of ice (Europe, Callisto and others).

The probe was named Icefin, and it was created by a team of scientists and engineers from the Georgia Institute of Technology. The probe was passed through a well with a diameter of only 30 centimeters, which was drilled in a glacier 20 meters thick. The goal of the project is to reach the bottom and fix the inhabitants of the Ross Sea. The probe was able to sink to the bottom (the depth in this region is about half a kilometer) and make the necessary entry.

As it turned out, life in this region is in full swing: the probe took off sponges, anemones, sea stars and other representatives of the "ice life". By the way, the Icefin probe can move under water, the maximum available path for it is 3 kilometers. The system can withstand a mile and a half kilometers, which is also quite good.
