Internet usage statistics in developing countries and the USA

1. What is the Internet used for?


Most of the Internet users indicated that they use social networks: ranging from 93% in the Philippines to 58% in China. Social network users are in all age groups, but most of them are among those under 35 years of age.

Together with social networks, 86% of Internet users from developing countries use the Internet to connect with friends and family members. Users prefer to use the Internet to access political (54%), medical (46%) or government information (42%). Most political information from the Internet is obtained in countries: Tunisia (72%), Lisbon (70%) and Egypt (68%).

Using the Internet to express their political and religious views is less popular. Less than four out of ten respondents noted that they share their opinions about goods (37%), political events (34%) and religion (30%). Discussion of these topics varies from 8% among social network users from Russia and Ukraine, who discuss politics and religion, to 64% of their Jordan users, who do the same.

2. Owning mobile phones and smartphones


Among mobile phone owners in 32 countries, 76% use them to write text messages, 55% of users in developing countries use their phones to photograph and record video.

3. Percentage of Internet users in different countries


Three leaders in the list of countries studied: the United States (87% of the population uses the Internet or has a smartphone), Chile (76%) and Russia (73%).

Leaders: USA (80%), Russia (78%) and Chile (72%).

5. Percentage of use of fixed telephone lines in different countries


The most telephone lines used in Lebanon are 79%, significantly higher than in the US (60%). About half or more in Venezuela (59%) and Argentina also have landline phones.

6. Writing text messages is the most popular use of cell phones.


Most of all phone users write messages to each other. Photographing on the phone and recording video are most popular in Latin America - about two-thirds of Venezuelans (75%), Chileans (72%), Mexicans (68%) and Argentines (66%) regularly take photos with their mobile phones.

7. What is the Internet used for?


Most of all - for social networks and information. Less - for career development and business goals. Getting political news from the Internet is more typical for the male than for the female. Country data:

8. Factors affecting the use of the Internet


The owner of a computer at home has the probability of using the Internet at the level of 0.77 (on a scale from 0 to 1), or 77%. A user without a computer has a probability of 0.35 (35%). Fluency in English gives probability (+0.28), secondary education gives probability in (+0.22), high income - (+0.12), male (+0.06) and unemployed - (+0.03).
