Today, the largest microblogging service, Twitter, is nine years old.
Exactly nine years ago, on March 21, 2006, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey left the first tweet in history.
The audience of the resource has about 200 million active users (who log in to Twitter at least once a month), of which 50 million use Twitter every day. According to the company Alexa Internet , which is a subsidiary of Amazon and collects statistics on attendance of Internet resources, today Twitter ranks eighth in the ranking of the most visited sites around the world, and seventh in the United States. The resource, which was originally conceived as a simple service for instant SMS exchange between a company of friends, today has become an integral part of Internet culture and has spawned such a phenomenon as microblogging.

Twitter got its name, as it is already accepted, by chance. The founders of the word "Twitter", which means Twitter / chat, seemed very accurate and succinct for the name of the service, where you can leave a message no longer than 140 characters.
