Snowden, Assange, Schwartz, Napster, Anonymous and ThePirateBay - 5 films worth seeing

Better to see once than hear a hundred times. Guided by this simple maxim, I present to you a brief overview of the documentary must-see films about Internet activists who have changed our reality. The reality in which we live is created (including) by the efforts of these people.

The average movie length is 105 minutes. Years of screen release 2012-2015. Sorted in random order. Everything is on Pirate Bay. Five of six are definitely worth watching!

1. Citizenfour [+++]

Documentary film by Laura Poitras , which received Oscar for him. Mainly focused on the events directly around Snowden's first interview in Hong Kong. It also shows Glen Greenwald and other journalists directly involved in the creation of the first reports. A lot of unique material. From remembered - the construction staff of the new data center of the NSA, Greenwald school not able to work with gpg, Assange, who calls Snowden a CIA employee (at that time Snowden was in the media as an NSA employee).

2.The Fifth Estate [++++]

Assange and Domscheit-Berg in the bar
A big pseudo documentary about the creation and fall of WikiLeaks "Based on" the book, but with sufficient detail and binding to the actual events. The main characters are Julian Assange and Daniel Domscheit-Berg , the second project employee. If we make allowance for artistic exaggerations caused by adaptation for the mass audience, an interesting movie is worth the time spent. From memorable: the scene celebrating the first release.

3. The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz [++++]

Aaron Schwartz talks about demandprogress on russia today
A documentary about Aaron Schwartz , a programmer who helped make reddit, the first rss specification, the first website for Creative Commons and so on and so forth, and then was driven to suicide by trying to download all the scientific articles from JSTOR and put them into the open access. The film has a lot of interviews with various interesting Internet personalities, relatives, lawyers, a lot of archival materials, a story about anti-SOPA struggle. Instructive movie.

4. Downloaded [++++]

Sean Fanning and Sean Parker
( guess the billionaire from the photo )

A documentary about the creation, triumph and shutdown of Napster . About how two simple guys, Sean Fanning and Sean Parker, have undermined the global recording industry, opened up a pandora's box and paved the way for p2p technologies. By the way, Sean Parker eventually became a billionaire (having a hand on Facebook), and Sean Fanning is only a millionaire, but he also does not live in poverty. The film is filled with archival materials, interviews with all involved, including the former director of Sony, Noel Gallagher from Oasis, the former director of the RIAA, and so on and so forth. 1999-2000, p2p revolution, mp3, modems and sunset offline music sales.

5. We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists [+++++]

anonymus
Documentary about Anonymous, 4chan and LulzSec. A lot of interviews with direct participants of events, from anonymus who received prison sentences, to that very director HbGary . The filmmakers were not afraid to insert samples of original content from 4chan there and did not cut out F * words (NSFW). Reflects the role of Anonymus in the Arab Spring in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya, as well as in the Occupy WallStreet in the cradle of democracy. In general, definitely, mustsee!

6. TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away from Keyboard [++]

Guys from piratebay
Monotonous Swedish documentary about the founders of The Pirate Bay: Gottfried Svartholm, Frederick Neiyom and Peter Sunde. I added to the list, just for the merits of TPB before the Internet, but the rest are definitely worth seeing.
