Sony unveils Morpheus VR prototype

Sony continues to develop a virtual reality helmet Morpheus, the prototype of which was first shown a year ago at GDC 2014. Then the company said that it had been experimenting with virtual reality helmets for several years. In 2010, engineers made several prototypes using Sony components and PlayStation Move controllers. These controllers are motion sensitive. A player can take one in his hand - and use it as a weapon or sports equipment in the game.

Over the past year, several modifications have been made to the project. Thus, the size of the OLED-display is increased from 5 "to 5.7", the resolution has remained the same 1920x1080. The new size corresponds to the screen Oculus Rift Developers' Kit 2 (DK2), although there is higher resolution.

Morpheus screen refresh rate has been increased from 60 to 120 Hz, latency when displaying an image has been reduced to 18 ms. The field of view has been increased from 90 ° to almost 100 °.

For more accurate tracking of head movements, three more LEDs were added to the design (a total of nine are used).

Approximate dates for the start of Morpheus retail sales have been announced: the first half of 2016. True, the price is not reported.

In general, this year may be the release of several helmets and virtual reality glasses from different manufacturers. There is hope that the consumer version of the Oculus Rift will finally be released. HTC and Valve are working on the Vive model, while Samsung has ported the Gear VR virtual reality gadget for the Galaxy S6 mobile phones, so by the time Morpheus comes on the market it will be a bit crowded.
