MediaTek and Android Wear: smart watches are becoming easier and more accessible

MediaTek, the world's second largest developer of hardware platforms for mobile devices, showed the first prototype of smart watches on the Android Wear operating system and the MediaTek MT2601 chipset.

The MT2601 chipset includes two Cortex-A7 cores operating at 1.2 GHz, an ARM Mali-400 MP graphics accelerator, and a set of all necessary wireless interfaces. PCB area is less than 480 mm 2 . This allows you to create a wide range of wearable devices based on the chipset - from basic fitness trackers to full-fledged flagship products based on Android Wear.

The prototype watch with Android Wear and MT2601 demonstrates MediaTek's maximum level of readiness to enter a new market segment. The wearable device has a screen with a resolution of 240x240 pixels and a full set of all basic sensors for clocks: proximity, motion, pressure, heartbeat, and also a gyroscope.

The key difference between smart watches with Android Wear OS based on MT2601 will be an economical power consumption and lower cost of finished products. Thus, the power consumption of the newest chipset is reduced by 41.5% compared to existing solutions, sharpened by Android Wear. And thanks to the support of low screen resolutions in the MT2601, end-device manufacturers will be able to create entry-level models at an affordable price.

The newest chipset MT2601 has already been launched into mass production. The first production models of smart watches with Android Wear on the MediaTek platform can be demonstrated in a week as part of the 2015 MWC in Barcelona.
