29 years ago, the Mir orbital complex began operation

The Mir orbital research complex has functioned in near-Earth space since February 20, 1986 - it was then that the base unit was launched into orbit. For 15 years of operation, the station was visited by one hundred and four astronauts, and five target modules were attached to the unit.

The Mir station began work in orbit on February 20, 1986. During its operation, one hundred and four astronauts from twelve countries worked on it. Cosmonauts Leonid Kizim and Vladimir Soloviev made the first manned flight to it from the 1st main expedition in June on the Soyuz T-15 spacecraft, and the first international flight took place in 1987 - except for Soviet cosmonauts was Mohammed Faris from Syria. Total manned flight was thirty-nine.

The last station crew was S. Zaletin and A. Kaleri, they started on April 4, 2000, arrived at the station on April 6 and left on June 16, having conserved it.

The main module of the station was put into orbit on February 20, 1986. Module weight - 20.9 tons. The station initially provided for the possibility of adding new modules, the first of which was put into orbit in the spring of next year. Kvant-1 is an astrophysical research module weighing more than eleven tons. Its design had a sealed laboratory compartment with an adapter chamber. To secure this module, the crew made an unplanned spacewalk. In total, five target modules were added to the station.

The Mir long-term orbital station was intended for crew work and rest of up to six people, control of on-board systems, electricity supply and experiments. The station consisted of four compartments - a working, transitional, intermediate chamber and an unpressurized aggregate compartment. The maneuvering of the station was carried out with the help of two sustainer engines with a 300 kg load each installed in the aggregate compartment. The orientation system used thirty-two engines with a load of 14 kg.

During the work at the station, a number of emergency situations occurred. The first can be called the unplanned departure of astronauts into space for the docking of the Kvant-1 module. In February 1997, a fire occurred at the station, the crew had to wear gas masks due to smoke, then respirators. In the same year, toxic ethylene glycol leaked from the air conditioning system. On June 25, 1997, the Progress M-34 transport cargo ship collided with the Spektr module.
