Smart Home Universities: How iRidium mobile technologies are used in education
Higher education is often and fairly criticized for lagging behind reality, not keeping pace with progress - especially in matters of the future Internet. But today we will talk about a pleasant exception to this rule: how iRidium mobile technologies are used in research and development of the Internet of things at universities around the world.
The main building of the University of Antwerp
iRidium in Europe
Particularly indicative is the collaboration with the University of Antwerp. This is one of the leading universities in Belgium, which is part of the Utrecht Network Association of European Universities.
In 2013, the University of Antwerp opened a new Faculty of Technical Sciences, which provides training in the following specialties: ')
electronic engineering
engineering,
chemistry
electromechanics (specialization: auto mechanics, electrical engineering and automation).
When choosing iRidium for its curriculum, the University of Antwerp was guided by the following criteria: powerful and inexpensive software for students and researchers, the ability to connect multiple PLCs and devices, the ability to work with all standard computers of the university. IRidium software is used in research projects, in the preparation of term papers and dissertations at the university.
The semester is built in the following way: first, there will be a study of how iRidium works and what capabilities it has. This is done by a small team of two students and several teachers.
Using iRidium at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering
iRidium is used to demonstrate the automation capabilities of modern production facilities, workshops and warehouses, and multimedia interfaces for managing them from a tablet or PC. from March 2016 ~ 230 students will work with iRidium.
Using iRidium at the Faculty of Chemistry
Tagil software is used as an MMI for control of measuring devices, which will be located in the distillation column of a small research biodiesel reactor.
Using iRidium at the Faculty of Electromechanics
To demonstrate the processes in the field of automation, two training projects were launched:
The SMC IPC-202 SMC bottle filling conveyor operates at the industrial automation department. This is a learning system in which bottles are fed from a warehouse, filled and closed with a lid.
At the building automation department, an educational model of the house is arranged with all the necessary switches, lamps and curtain motors. You can turn on the light, adjust its brightness and control the curtains using various K-Bus modules from Beckhoff.
An example of a term paper done at the Faculty of Electromechanics, in which iRidium manages Beckhoff PLC and the light installation:
This project has excellent commercial prospects.
By the end of 2015, 95 students will work with iRidium
Using iRidium at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
The iRiridum software is used as a multimedia interface (MMI) for a test car that measures road parameters (roll resistance, measurement of holes and other defects, formation of a track).
Used PLC and PC for storing and managing data. It is supposed to demonstrate current measurements from sensors on a tablet with iRidium for instrument calibration before starting a journey of XX km through a remote connection between the test machine and the tablet and errors in current measurements when driving or in case of breakdown.

iRidium in Russian Universities: Smart City Laboratory, MGSU
The Smart City project of Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (MGSU) is a partner of international associations of manufacturers and installers of equipment for automation systems KNX, LON, BACnet, and leading equipment manufacturers.
The laboratory provides training in the iRidium software package and provides an opportunity to pass an exam to receive an iRidium specialist certificate. Training classes are equipped with stands with current models of devices from leading manufacturers of automation equipment systems.
The cooperation with the Ural Federal University, about which I wrote a little in the last article, is also discussed.
iRidium in American universities
iRidium is just beginning its entry into the American market. At the Pratt Institute, one of the leading institutions in the arts, design and architecture in the United States, iRidium is used to create a dynamic learning environment for students. Currently iRidium controls various AMX devices on the student campus. And upon completion of the modernization of the Advanced Technologies Cabinets, iRidium will manage various equipment with iPad Air
These are not all examples of using iRidium technologies in education. It is commonplace when universities or individual teachers acquire iRidium licenses not only for educational but also everyday tasks — for example, lighting control and multimedia on campuses, i.e. use iRidium technology right on purpose.
The company strongly encourages such initiatives: acquaintance with iRidium at the training stage should help to form an extensive community of integrators, engineers, architects and designers who are loyal to the iRidium software.
