Downgrade OS as a means to improve the performance of the old MacBook

There is a MacBookPro 15 "Mid 2009 (Core2Duo 2.66, 4GB RAM, 512 GB HDD). A year ago, the owner inadvertently updated the OS to version 10.9 of the Mavericks. As a result, the computer began to slow down, which was not noticed before. OS 10.10 Yosemite was installed on the computer and this version was installed. As a result, the machine was brought to a completely inoperative state. Below is a brief report on how we corrected the situation.

Diagnosis

Before we take down this whole nightmare, we decided to test the car a bit. So. Loading the OS from the button press until the Finder windows appear takes 6 minutes. Applications from autorun (Viber and two cloud clients) - the same number. Start Word 2011 and open the document - 15 minutes. And the ruddy rainbow cursor pleased us with its appearance after each entered letter. We restart the machine with the Shift pressed and watch in the Activity Monitor how much memory the bare system assumes. It turned out 3.8 GB (200 MB free). For curiosity, we tried to slightly increase the amount of memory: there was a free 4GB bar available. It turned out that 5.5 GB is occupied (500 free). At this stage, the stopwatch was forgotten; It all worked a little faster on the eye: the rainbow cursor no longer appeared when entering text. But the launch of applications still took 1-2 minutes.

Treatment

Formatted the hard drive and set the OS 10.7.5 Lion. (The version was chosen almost at random: it was this very distribution kit that was on hand). Installed applications. Results: system load 1 min; Word 2011 launch 1–5 sec. The rest is similar. Everything works as it was before the unsuccessful upgrade to the Mavericks. Memory in Activity Monitor: 1.5 GB busy; 2.5 free (run without shift).

findings

Owners of such machines should not buy into flattering offers of a free update of the system. If you have already made this error, you do not have to buy expensive components like a solid-state disk and new memory bars. As Michelangelo said, you just need to remove the excess.
