The project of the Russian virtual reality helmet VRD is closed

Hello, dear readers Geektimes! Since the subscription period of the corporate blog ends here, I decided to take advantage of this and announce the closure of the project of the Russian virtual reality helmet VRD publicly in this way.

The Russian virtual reality helmet VRD grew out of a DIY project and was an attempt to create "one's own", native and accessible in the field of virtual reality devices. Part of the story can be traced through my articles on geektimes and posts in the VK group .

We will not go into details of the reasons for the closure in this article, I will only say that this is classically basically the lack of clear positioning and niches in the market, lack of funding, self-sufficiency and, consequently, the lack of sufficient time and motivation to develop the project. It is difficult to say unequivocally, but there is informal information that even such companies as Oculus and HTC Vive still do not make super-profits or are working on the verge of profitability, but look to the future.
Moreover, as practice has shown, it is not easy in Russia to develop high-tech electronics (especially using MEMS technology).

Otherwise, with the help of 3 people during off-hours, we did what we did. The helmet had a resolution of 1920x1080, 3 degrees of freedom, built-in sound and support for the Oculus Runtime right up to the latest versions of the Oculus Home. Since the manufacture of a high-quality case is a very costly event that will pay for itself only in batches of more than 1,000, we used a ready-made and quite acceptable in terms of characteristics. There was a 3D model of its own case, but it was not economically feasible to launch it into a small and experimental series.

Anyway, we got a lot of experience working on the project. I personally would like to thank everyone who participated or followed our project. Especially, our customers who tested, used and gave feedback on the device.
Special thanks to my colleagues and partners - Roman, Nikolay and Koval Andrey, who actually even remotely worked on the screen board. And of course, the administration of TM, which gave us access to the corporate blog, albeit not immediately.

I am sure that the VR theme in the world will evolve, since it is a really exciting and interactive technology that opens up new possibilities for the 3D world!

PS: We still have several sets of VRD helmets without trackers (case with headphones, FullHD screen with HDMI card, wires) that can be connected to a computer and used, for example, to watch movies or other creative projects with stereo vision. Or make your own VR helmet based on these components. For details through the LAN or our group BK .

A little late with the survey, but even so interesting community opinion.
Those who are ready, please join our BK group in order not to lose contact.
