Twitter will transfer the database of Russian users in Russia in 2018

Large technology companies one by one go towards Roskomnadzor in terms of agreement to transfer the data of Russian users to servers within the Russian Federation. This is now announced by Twitter. The management of the company declared its readiness to work in accordance with Russian legislation and transfer all the necessary data to the territory of the Russian Federation by mid-2018, Kommersant writes .

"We are in the process of determining what information about Russian citizens and organizations involved in Twitter’s commercial relations in Russia can be allocated for storage in the Russian Federation," the letter from the vice president for public policy in Europe, the Middle East and African Twitter Inc. Not all companies are ready to meet Russian officials. For example, LinkedIn, the world's largest social network of professionals, did not agree to transfer data from Russian citizens to the Russian Federation. As a result, Roskomnadzor, in a judicial proceeding, succeeded in blocking this social network in Russia. LinkedIn representatives met with officials in early March of this year, but apparently did not reach agreement. In any case, Roskomnadzor subsequently declared that the social network does not plan to eliminate the violation of the law. Roskomnadzor believes that this company collects and transmits information about citizens who are not users of the social network, without their consent.

Many foreign companies have already fulfilled the requirements of the law “On Personal Data”. According to Roskomnadzor, such companies include Russian divisions of large foreign financial institutions, including HSBC, Citi, Raiffeisen, Rosbank (part of the Societe Generale group) “Intesa” and Unicredit, trade (Yves Rocher, Avon, Oriflame) and IT -company (Microsoft, HP), as well as tour operator Pegas and restaurant chain McDonalds.

The Law on Personal Data, which entered into force on September 1, 2015, obliges the storage of personal data of Russian citizens in the country. According to the law, the websites of violators of this law must be entered into a special register by Roskomnadzor. If violations are not eliminated, the site and services of such a company are finally blocked. Roskomnadzor also conducts regular inspections of companies for compliance with the law.

The last time Twitter met with Roskomnadzor employees about a month ago. Then the meeting was attended by the chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications Leonid Levin and Maksuini. The main topic of the meeting is the implementation of microblogging by the Russian legislation.
