Professional social network Viadeo liquidated its Russian office

Viadeo is a professional social network that operates on the same principle as the leader of the segment, the social network LinkedIn. Under the law on personal data, the company had to deploy servers to store personal data of Russians in the territory of the Russian Federation, however, like its direct competitor LinkedIn, it did not. In total, Viadeo has at its disposal data on 1.5 million Russians, which are stored on servers in the United States.

Viadeo liquidates its office in Russia because of the unprofitability of a Russian subsidiary, as reported by the newspaper Kommersant . In this case, the closure of the office does not mean the closure of the Russian version of the site. The address ru.viadeo.com still works fully.

Judging the closure of the office can be, first of all, by the state of the Russian legal entity LLC Viadeo Independent Media, which, according to the website kartoteka.ru, is in the process of liquidation.

The main reason for leaving the Russian market was the loss of the Russian subsidiary Viadeo. At the end of 2015, due to the crisis and budget cuts for hiring staff, Viadeo introduced an online recruiting service. For 2016, only a few dozen Russian companies used the resource. In addition, the company is being liquidated in other regions, concentrating its resources in the organization’s home country - in France.

The reason for leaving the Russian legal space can be not only the direct losses of the company, although this is important. In August of this year, the Tagansky District Court satisfied the claim of Roskomnazdor against LinkedIn, a competitor to Viadeo. According to the court decision, the American social network was found guilty of violating Russian legislation on the storage of personal data, as it did not localize and did not host servers to store the Russian credentials in the country. Total LinkedIn Russian audience is 5 million registrations.

This decision may be a precedent for a claim already to Viadeo. “Hypothetically, if you look at the service, there may be complaints about it,” said Natalia Moiseenkova, the former head of the Viodeo office in Russia.

Headhunter Development Director Boris Wolfson noted that the departure of Viadeo from the Russian market was expected. “They had episodic sales, but they did not affect either our business or the market as a whole,” he commented on the situation.
