It is possible that in the near future, the US state of California will adopt ODF (Open Document Format for XML) as the official format for documents and other records,
CNet writes. If the bill proposed by Mark Leno, a democrat from San Francisco, is passed, then by January 1, 2008, California will become an “open” state.
A similar decision was previously announced by the states of Texas and Minnesota. On July 1, 2008, Minnesota will go to the open format of documents, and Texas will be tightened later - on September 1 of the same year.
The first ODF specifications were published in December 2006.
