What will happen to the eye if you look at the sun through a telescope?

Astronomer shows the result of "observation" in practice

Since childhood, many of us have heard that it is impossible to look at the sun through binoculars or a telescope - eyes will be damaged. We all know why - the rays of the Sun are focused, and the tissues of the eye can be damaged. But what could be the damage? The question is perhaps a little childish, but still interesting.

It is so interesting that all this was decided to check. An astronomer named Mark Thompson decided to put it into practice. He installed a 80mm telescope with a magnification of 50x, sent it to the sun, and looked through a telescope. True, he did not expose his eyes to the danger of damage — instead, the Sun “admired” the pig’s eyes.

The structure of the pig's eye is quite similar to the structure of the human eye. Therefore, this body is well demonstrates the consequences of observing the sun without protection, unprotected eye. At first, nothing seems to happen, but after 20 seconds, the eyes begin to smoke. And this is not steam - the eye tissue starts to burn.

For 20 seconds, a hole was formed in the eye, passing through the cornea and lens. Thompson cut the eye and found out that the degree of damage is very high - the radiation hit the deeper layers of the eyeball, and not just the surface.

What conclusion does the scientist make? “It’s a very, very bad idea to look at the sun with a telescope with an unprotected eye,” Thompson commented. But we did not doubt it, right?
