The number of suicides in the United States rose to a record level in 30 years

The USA is the only country with a developed economy where the number of suicides is steadily increasing.

For some unknown reason, the number of suicides in the United States has been constantly growing for more than ten years. According to the latest report of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2014 this figure rose to 13 per 100 thousand inhabitants, a record number of suicides since 1986, that is, almost thirty years.

Official experts cannot explain the reasons for such a strange tendency, because in all other developed countries, the suicide rate has declined in recent decades.

Experts are trying to understand the causes of this phenomenon. Some indicate an increase in opiate abuse and a financial downturn that began in 2008.

In the last study, there is no detailed mortality statistics by race, but previously such studies have been conducted. For example, scientists from Princeton University last year analyzed official statistics and found out that the increase in suicide is mainly observed among white men and women without higher education , especially at the age of 45-64 years.

In general, for the years 1999-2014, the suicide rate in the United States increased by 24%. At the same time, growth for white men 45-64 years old was 43%, and for women of the same age - 63%. In 2014, over 14,000 white middle-aged white men committed suicide in America. The total number of suicides in 2014 was 42,773.

Mortality among white men has increased not only because of suicide, but also from drug overdoses, liver disease and alcohol poisoning. Sociologists point to a decrease in the number of marriages and an increase in the number of divorces, and yet single men commit suicide by 3.5 times more often than married men.

Scientists also pay attention to a threefold (!) Increase in the number of suicides among girls 10-14 years old (from 50 to 150 per year).

For comparison, in 2013-2014 in Russia per 100 thousand inhabitants accounted for 19.5 suicides. In the first nine months of 2015, this figure dropped to 17.7 (in the USA - 13.0).

The most problematic Russian regions are Siberia and the Far East, where the suicide rate exceeds 30 cases per 100 thousand people. In some regions of the federation, this figure exceeded 60 cases per 100 thousand. These are the Altai Republic, Tuva, Buryatia, Nenets and Chukotka Autonomous Districts.

It is estimated that half of all suicides in Russia are the result of alcohol abuse .
