The US Emergency Response Team has recommended that all Windows
users remove the Apple QuickTime multimedia framework from their computers. The recommendation is related to
information received from Trendmicro , a computer security company.
Judging by the blog entry, Apple stops supporting QuickTime for Windows. The program has not received updates since January 2016, while experts have already found
two critical vulnerabilities in the framework, allowing to execute arbitrary code on the victim's computer. Both vulnerabilities require visiting a fabrication site in some way or opening a file with malware inside.
Although today the cases of exploitation of the described vulnerabilities are unknown, such precedents remain only a matter of time - since there will simply be no more software updates, even for critical vulnerabilities. Experts recommend simply removing QT in the traditional way, through the “Add or Remove Programs”. Apple itself for some reason did not bother with the safety of users of their Windows software and did not consider it necessary to officially announce the end of support.
The first version of Apple
QuickTime appeared in December 1991 as an add-on for the then
System 6 OS running the Macintosh computers. On Windows, the system was not fully ported, and only supported viewing a video proprietary to Apple.
