That is why, after conducting a series of experiments with 3D modeling under VR, at the end of 2014, we at the ITMO University launched the Video360Production project to study the capabilities of the “360 video” (or, otherwise, panoramic video) applied to VR - virtual and augmented reality technologies.
Now, apparently, the “360 video” boom is starting - many platforms and video hosting services already support the panoramic mode - YouTube, Facebook, LittlStar, Kolor, and a number of others. Many fans began to shoot panoramic video without waiting for the cameras to exit - with the help of special rigs, into which a large number of GoPro, Xiaomi, etc. cameras are inserted. Subsequently, the video from these cameras is stitched in special software.
In the “video 360” format, everything is filmed - from rock concerts to church services, from museums and excursions to technological processes:

Interestingly, in terms of optics, electronics, video processing, they are completely different. The number of lenses ranges from 2 to 16, and the processing of “video 360” is carried out both in the camera itself and can be rendered “outward”. The first thing worth noting is Nokia OZO recordings in stereo mode, the so-called “stereo 360”. Perhaps a non-professional and will not notice the difference, wearing virtual reality glasses, but this is an important difference. We published our impressions of the sensational Nokia OZO novelty in one of the previous articles written after the presentation at the Slush conference! (Helsinki, November 2015).

The first thing worth noting is Nokia OZO recordings in stereo mode, the so-called “stereo 360”. This means that a separate picture is created for each eye, while in the other cameras of a simpler design, the same is duplicated in both eyes. Perhaps a non-professional and will not notice the difference, wearing virtual reality glasses, but this is an important difference. Stereo mode and due to the number of lenses - 8 (195 degrees each). There are several microphones along the perimeter of the camera, which provides a surround sound close to = binaural sound.
The camera supports broadcasting not only on the monitor screen (only Apple Mac Pro (2013) or Retina 15 ”MacBook Pro), but also directly into Oculus Rift glasses. Interestingly, the video on the laptop is broadcast in the format of 8 different video streams (that is, without stitching). In the specification about the delay of the broadcast does not say anything, at Slush-2015 it was 5 seconds (for the monitor).
The camera records in continuous mode up to 45 minutes (30 frames / sec). All objects must be at least 20 cm away from the camera, otherwise the image will be “cut” because video streams from neighboring cameras incorrectly “overlap” each other. It weighs a little more than 4 kg.
Interestingly, there is still no demo video on the network. At the Slush conference! 2015 in Helsinki, we managed to watch a few demo videos (which, by the way, left much to be desired), as described in detail in the last article . It was hoped that new, higher-quality shooting examples would appear by the time the camera entered the market. Moreover, the target audience of the device is professionals.
