A team of 13 students of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur won the first prize in the engineering innovation competition KPIT-2016 with the i-Bike automatic e-bike project, which is able to move independently in the manner of a mobile phone. Bicycle can use people with disabilities.

As the students who were leading the project explain the idea of creating a bicycle, they were prompted by observations of how people with disabilities tried to pick up their bicycles from the parking lot. And these places are usually not suitable for such people.

Having set themselves the goal of creating a bicycle that can be controlled remotely, the students set to work. The result was an automatic transport based on an ordinary bicycle, capable of receiving commands via SMS and following at a specified point, guided by GPS. Along the way, the vehicle drives around obstacles using data from a laser rangefinder and sonar. It is argued that the Robel is even able to recognize bike lanes.

As a result, a person can call a bicycle, which will drive itself to the specified point. Further, if necessary, the bike will be able to steer and drive, thanks to the mechanism for turning the steering wheel and the side support wheels.

In this case, the entire device is based on a standard bike, and by turning the switch, the riders can turn off the steering assistance and lift the side wheels, which will turn the vehicle into an ordinary bike.

While working on the project, students realized that such transport can be used not only for the needs of people with disabilities, but also at rental points, or bike-sharing . Ideally, the bike can be called from the point of rental to the right place, and after use it will leave “home” itself.
