[Testing] Secure USB-drive with PIN-pad Kingston DataTraveler 2000
Hi, Giktayms! A flash drive that caused a lot of comments from habrazhiteley, came to me for a test. It will be about the acclaimed DataTraveler 2000 , a drive that is not 100% Kingston product, but at the same time, it is very interested users. I will say right away, I will not break the PIN-code set by improvised means, for all the other details, please under the cat.
At the time of publication of the article, the price in the Russian retail is still unknown: market.yandex.ru/product/13459150 - I think that the 16 GB drive will cost potential buyers about 6,000 rubles (about 80 euros at the current rate).

The key difference from all other drives is the presence of a physical PIN-pad. This method of protection is the most reliable. The development of iStorage company is a niche product and collaboration with Kingston will expand the horizons for promoting protected drives to the masses.
At the end of the flash drive there is the logo of the iStorage developer, on the side faces there is information about collaboration with ClevX. The cooperation of the three companies has brought very good results.
Inside the DataTraveler 2000, a small Li-Pol battery with a 3.7V power supply is installed to maintain the encryption system. Recharging goes automatically when connected via USB. The period of autonomous lying on the shelf is about one year, after the battery sits down, the PIN-data will be reset. A huge number of questions explained in the Russian manual .
Physically disassembling a flash drive without damaging the board and saving at least some decent look is not possible, so there will be some tin.
Initially, the flash drive was disassembled by unscrewing two screws on the end under the sticker and then the board can be pulled out of the aluminum tube. But the screws are filled with varnish and one of them did not want to leave their homeland. I had to pick up the Dremel. By the way, owning them on 80 levelers is not one of my virtues, but I mastered the body in half in half a day without any problems.
Inside is a PCB wrapped with copper foil. Foil gently remove that under it? On the one hand, the PIN-pad is expectedly located, on the other - the battery and everything ... One of the sides of the board is covered with black plastic and find out what is very difficult inside.
The plastic turned out to be not a good quality example and the heating with a hairdryer allowed only small pieces to be snapped off, and even then with damage to the printed circuit board. The solvent did not take this compound, it remained only patiently and slowly to warm up and split off fragments.
At some point, apparently I overheated the textolite, a crack broke and a breakaway large piece of plastic took half of the memory chip with me and exposed the contacts of the landing pad.
The flash drive is protected from flags and dust according to the IP57 standard - that is, dust that does not affect the operation of the device can get inside, and for a short dive to a depth of 1 meter, the drive will remain operational.
According to the program Flash Drive Information Extractor, the Phison PS2313 controller is used (it was not possible to verify this live), information about memory chips is not available programmatically.
The physical size of the disk is 15 502 147 584 bytes, the default flash drive is formatted in FAT32, but, at the request of the user, can work in exFAT or NTFS.
To unlock the flash drive, press the key with the key image, then enter the default PIN 11223344, then again with the key key. The green LED on the flash drive will turn on, indicating that the device has been unlocked. After that, within 30 seconds you need to connect the USB flash drive to the computer. If this is not done, the drive will block again. When working with a flash drive, no additional programs are required. When you remove the device from the USB connector lock occurs automatically.
The user manual describes in detail the process of changing the PIN by default, and immediately after the acquisition it is worth carrying out this procedure. PIN codes from 7 to 16 characters are supported.
A little bit about protection - after 10 incorrect attempts to enter a PIN code, the contents of the flash drive are deleted, and then you can reset the password and use the drive further, but you can’t recover deleted files.
The real disk capacity is 15 502 147 584 bytes, which, when recalculated, gives about 14 gigabytes. As I wrote in the drive, Toshiba's MLC type memory and Phison PS2251 controller are used.
Synthetic test to assess the correctness of the speeds declared by the manufacturer. Actually, most of the data listed on the boxes of flash drives and SSD from different manufacturers, it was obtained using ATTO Disk Benchmark.
This test allows you to evaluate the drive in four modes: linear read / write, read / write blocks in 4K, linear read / write at a queue depth of 32 commands, read / write blocks in 4K at a queue depth of 32 commands.
In this application there is an additional test that uses three scenarios for working with files: ISO (two large files), Program (folder with a large number of small files) and Games (folder with an assortment of large and small files)
Kingston DataTraveler 2000 is not the fastest and not the smallest flash drive. This is a purely niche product for knowledgeable people. If earlier it was not easy to find iStorage products in Russia, then thanks to the cooperation with Kingston, everyone (who knows what they really needed, they already bought) will be able to use such secure devices.
However, I note that a good speed and protection from external influences are a prerequisite for demanding customers.

Kingston DataTraveler 2000 is not the fastest and not the smallest flash drive. This is a purely niche product for knowledgeable people. If earlier it was not easy to find iStorage products in Russia, then thanks to the cooperation with Kingston, everyone (who knows what they really needed, they already bought) will be able to use such secure devices.
