Rutracker: summing up the preliminary results of the “eternal” blocking

As many experts and ordinary users assumed, after the Rutracker torrent tracker was blocked on the territory of Russia, there were fewer visitors, but not much. At the same time, if the number of unique visitors from the territory of Russia decreased (albeit slightly), then the number of foreign users greatly increased (the Netherlands almost doubled). “Foreign” users partially compensated for the outflow of domestic visitors.

Tracking the exact attendance of users from Russia is no longer possible, since a sufficiently large part of the tracker's audience falls on it with the help of various kinds of blocking bypass tools. These are browser, VPN and proxy plugins.

On Monday, January 25, the tracker was visited by 1.14 million people. Already on January 26, on Tuesday, after providers began to block a resource, attendance dropped to 986 thousand people. And on January 27 the number of visitors fell to 861 thousand people. Apparently, this is not at all what the initiators of blocking the resource on the territory of Russia expected.



Most of the Internet providers (about 94%) working in Russia closed access to the resource for Russian users. Roskomnadzor promised to deal with those companies that have not yet begun to do so.

Representatives of Roskomnadzor suggest that the attendance of the tracker at a high level will not last long. In particular, Vadim Ampelonsky, spokesman for Roskomnadzor, said this: “During the first few days and weeks — while the media are blocking Rutracker — the Barbra Streisand effect is in effect, and users come to the site to check if it is blocked or not. The real drop in attendance can only be traced after three months, when only regular visitors who are interested in using the portal even after its blocking remain on the resource. ”

The fact that the attendance of the tracker has decreased slightly, can be considered a partial merit of the administration of the resource. Before blocking the torrent tracker, she tried using all available means to explain how to bypass the blocking. And this is completely legitimate, as Roskomnadzor itself has confirmed .

By the way, German Klimenko, presidential adviser on the Internet, spoke out against the “eternal” blocking of sites on the territory of Russia, which was already reported to Geektimes.

So far, it is unclear what the copyright holders think about all this, who have lost the ability to delete all distributions with copyrighted content.



If they previously had a reliable tool for interacting with the administration of the resource, now this tool simply does not exist. And it is unlikely he will appear soon.
