Software developers working on the anonymous Tor network have
announced the successful completion of the first public funding
campaign for the project. During the six weeks of the campaign, more than 5,000 people took part in it, donating a total of $ 2,05874.
Compared to the actual costs required to support the development team, this amount is not impressive. For example, according to a
report published last week, the cost of working for the Tor Project in 2014 was $ 2.5 million. But the developers, however, are very impressed and satisfied with the result of the campaign.
The basis of the project funding is state grants from the US government. The main purpose of funding is to "promote democracy in totalitarian countries." Public funding in 2014 amounted to 75% of the annual budget of Tor. And this is less than in the previous year, when the share of government grants was 90%. Other sponsors include Reddit, Radio Free Asia, the National Science Foundation of the USA.

But the developers are constantly trying to get away from such a critical dependence of the project from government funding. The project almost all the time
accepts donations , but last year, the developers decided to widely publicize and support an active fundraising campaign. Early last year, planning a campaign, they
said that the funds received will be directed to additional efforts to develop hidden services and support mobile devices.
