Fishing rods connected to the smartphone and the Internet

Startup FishSentry has developed a system that tells the owner of the fishing rod when the fish pecked at the bait. The alert comes on a smartphone on Android or iOS. In addition to this, the application tracks and saves time, date, location, weather conditions and the moon phase so that users can calculate the most successful time and place for fishing, and sends data to the cloud to share it with other fishermen.

If you are fishing, then answer the question: how would such “smart” fishing rods would be useful for you?

Work on the project FishSentry began due to the fact that one of the founders of this startup missed a large salmon on Puget Sound, a system of bays in the state of Washington. A month after this event, in October 2014, the development of the algorithm began, then in 2015 - testing in the field, and in June 2015 - a patent application for a prototype was filed. If a startup collects the required amount using crowdfunding, then the first fishing rods will go to customers in August 2016.

The developers of FishSentry will start selling with three options of "connected" fishing rods, from 2.6 to 2.9 meters long. Each fishing rod is equipped with sensors on the base and at the end to take dozens of indications of movement every second. This allows you to quickly inform the host on the smartphone via Bluetooth about the bite.

For ordinary fishing enthusiasts, this invention is unlikely to be useful - although I will not speak for them, as I myself am not a fan of this type of activity. But the app and “smart” fishing poles will make life easier for those fishermen who simultaneously watch several fishing rods for fishing from a boat. The application will inform the owner in time that the fishing rod has caught something, and if it is rubbish, then the fisherman will be able to release the bait in time and not lose it.

It can be useful to keep track of the date, moon phase, weather and other parameters, including geolocation, so that the user can choose a good time for fishing. The application on the smartphone will be able to share information with other users to make something like a social network.

A startup from Seattle launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to raise a quarter of a million dollars. According to the data on January 17, the project collected only two and a half thousand with the help of nine backers; fifty-five days are left until the end of the campaign.

If you are a fan of fishing - share your opinion: how useful will this system be?
