Oculus Rift are not pioneers in the field of VR. In the 90s, the first attempts of other companies to create such devices failed with commercial success due to the lack of the level of development of computer and mobile technologies necessary at that time. Oculus presented their first version for Oculus Dev Kit 1 developers in 2012 on kickstarter, successfully collecting the required amount. The first version had 3 degrees of freedom, the screen resolution was 1280 x 800 and the viewing angle was 110 degrees.
In the spring of 2014, Oculus was purchased by Facebook for 2 MHR. $. In the summer of 2014, the second version of the Oculus Dev Kit 2 was released, which already had a 1920x1080 screen, 6 degrees of freedom and a viewing angle of 100 degrees:
The first consumer version of the device has a surround sound system in the form of built-in headphones, Positional Tracking and (according to not yet fully confirmed sources) 2 screens with a resolution of 1200x1080.
