Not so long ago, the head of the Austrian startup Rebeat Innovation Günter Loibl (Günter Loibl)
spoke about attracting investments in the amount of 4.8 million dollars. This money will be used to finance the project "HD-plates." According to Loibl, "improved" vinyl can get on store shelves as early as 2019. We will understand what we still developed in Rebeat.

What's the innovation
A patent application for this technology in Rebeat
filed back in 2016. It describes the main drawbacks of the traditional method of production of plates and
Direct Metal Mastering : the complexity of the process, the failure of high frequencies and reduced sound quality due to the characteristics of the carrier.
')
The production technology of HD-vinyl Rebeat
consists of three stages. At the first, the high-resolution audio file is converted into a “topographic three-dimensional map” of the matrix for the future record. A 3D model is used to remove extra gaps between tracks. After optimization, cutting is made on a ceramic carrier with a frequency range of more than 6 times the traditional figures.
The next step is pressing. Here Rebeat indicates the difference in quality of records when working with a nickel matrix: a record released first may be superior in quality to the sound of a record released by a thousandth. With ceramics, which is used by Rebeat, there will be no such problem.
Here are the advantages of HD-records manufacturer calls:
- frequency range - 100 kHz;
- 3D laser engraving;
- making records with the same level of quality;
- time of "work" plates without loss of quality - 30% more;
- no toxic chemicals are used in production;
- full compatibility with existing vinyl players;
- plans for the release of special players under HD-vinyl.
The future of HD vinyl
According to Günter Loibl, Rebeat Innovation has
ordered a laser system worth 600 thousand dollars. She will be with the company in July. With her, Rebeat will make trial pieces and show them at the
Making Vinyl conference in Detroit in October of this year. If everything goes according to plan, the company will take another eight months for revision, and in 2019 it will release the first "mass" HD-plates.
In 2016, when Rebeat became known for the first time, Markkus Rovito, editor of Electronic Musician, wrote a column about possible new media problems. He
named several reasons why HD-vinyl will not be popular:
- high price;
- historically low demand for such developments;
- only full HD players will reveal the full sound.
The demand for vinyl has
increased since 2016. If all the advantages of HD discs described are implemented by Rebeat, especially in terms of full compatibility with all players, the format will probably be able to find its audience.
Other innovative ideas
The increase in demand for records in recent years has been followed by the emergence of new ways of making vinyl. In 2016, the Canadian company Viryl Technologies has
promised to release presses for plates, which will speed up the production process. Due to automation, the release of the plate
takes three times less time compared to traditional production.
In the same year, Symcon, a Dutch company specializing in the manufacture of optical discs,
announced the development of technology for the production of plates by
injection molding . This approach should reduce production costs and improve sound quality.

told about their experiments with records. In individual orders, she produced vinyl interspersed with sparkles, leaves, pages from books and bills. Once the company even received an order for the release of plates of coffee grounds.
