Chinese police issued smart glasses with face recognition

There are 170 million surveillance cameras on the streets of Chinese cities, which are connected to a single face recognition system. But the criminals who are wanted are also aware of this system, as well as the installation sites of the cameras. Not everyone can be found.

The transport police in Zhengzhou City (Henan Province in the east of the central part of China) is participating in a new experiment that can significantly improve the effectiveness of the criminal search system, reports the China News Service news agency. Local police were given special glasses with video cameras, which are also connected to the software for face recognition.

Gadgets were issued primarily to the traffic police officers who work at the busy Zhengzhou East Railway Station, because most people pass by before their eyes. The time of the year was also chosen specially: this weekend is the biggest passenger traffic before the Chinese New Year: city dwellers are leaving for family holidays in the villages with relatives. Through the station Zhengzhou East daily passes from 70 thousand to 120 thousand passengers.

The glasses are specially designed for the police and connected to a handheld computer. After scanning the passerby’s face, the computer connects to the central database where the search for matches is performed.

The experiment immediately proved its effectiveness: by February 6, the police managed to identify seven fugitives who are accused of hiding from the scene of an accident and human trafficking. In addition, 26 cases were revealed at the four entrances to the station, when citizens tried to evade identity recognition with the help of glasses (identity fraud), according to the publication Cnrail.net, which specializes in the news of the Chinese railway industry.

By 2020, the Chinese authorities intend to increase the number of outdoor security cameras from the current 170 million to 400 million. Perhaps the “smart” glasses with face recognition will be given out to more police officers and civilian volunteers. Then escape from persecution fugitives will be almost impossible.
