Recently, Seek Thermal thermal imagers connected to smartphones appeared on the market. Their matrix has a resolution of 206x156 pixels. Due to the fact that the smartphone is involved in all the processing and visualization, the price of such a thermal imager starts from 25,900 rubles.



The company Dadzhet invited me to test two models of thermal imagers - Seek Thermal and Seek Thermal XR.

Models differ only in the lens. In Seek Thermal, the viewing angle is 36 ° and the lens has a fixed focus, in Seek Thermal XR, the viewing angle is 20 ° and the focus is adjusted with a ring on the lens. Each of the models has two modifications - with a MicroUSB connector for Android smartphones and a Lightning connector for iPhone.



I tested the model for Android smartphones.



Seek Thermal can only work with Android smartphones that support USB-OTG. You can check support by connecting a microUSB USB flash drive to your smartphone or a regular USB flash drive, mouse or keyboard via a MicroUSB-USB OTG adapter.

To operate the imager, you need to install the Seek Thermal application from Google Play or the App Store.



The application is designed for the fact that the imager is connected to the connector on the bottom of the smartphone (the wide part of the MicroUSB connector should be facing the back of the smartphone). If the connector is located in a different place or turned over, you will have to use a MicroUSB extension cable, which you can also buy in Dadzhet. However, it was more convenient to use a thermal imager with an extension cable even when the connector is “in the right place”: you can control the smartphone with one hand and direct the thermal imager lens with the other where you need it.

The application supports smartphone rotation and can shoot both vertical and horizontal image. See how cold air blows from the air conditioner.



The application has four modes of operation:
“Normal mode” - a picture without indication of temperature;
“Zone” - temperature display in the center;
"High / Low" - displays the maximum and minimum temperature;
“Threshold value” - everything below the specified threshold is displayed in gray.



There are nine options for color temperature visualization.

The program saves photos and videos as they are visible on the screen. If the temperature display was turned on, it will be in the saved file. It is impossible to analyze the temperature at specific points after the shooting.

To compare the viewing angle of two thermal imagers, I made a thermogram of the city view from the balcony. This is what thermal imagers have seen.

Accuracy of temperature display in thermal imagers is low. At a room temperature of 25.4 °, the Benetech GM300 pyrometer showed a wall temperature of 25.2 °. Seek Thermal showed 21 °, Seek Thermal XR - 33 °. Error - 5-8 degrees. Most precisely, thermal imagers measured the temperature of my forehead: Seek Thermal - 29 °, Seek Thermal XR - 31 °, pyrometer - 30.6 °. In the freezer, the pyrometer showed a temperature of -16 °, Seek Thermal: -11 °, Seek Thermal XR: -5 °. Water in a boiling kettle: Seek Thermal: 91 °, Seek Thermal XR: 94 °. Surely other specimens of thermal imagers discrepancies will be different.
