A few hours ago, the LeakedSource resource, which monitors and analyzes leaks,
reported that the Vkontakte user base with a number of accounts exceeding 100 million is being sold on the network. The data is not freely available, but sold for 1 Bitcoin (almost $ 600) current exchange rate). After analyzing the database, it turned out that it contained exactly 100,544,934 records. After the information about what happened was published on Geektimes, many readers found their data in the leaked database. At the same time, the passwords of a number of users were complex, by no means dictionary. However, this did not prevent hackers from obtaining information about such accounts. Now the social network "Vkontakte" commented on what happened.
According to the administration of the resource, we are not talking about hacking into the social network user database. The network has an old database of usernames and passwords collected by hackers in 2011-2012. “There was no hacking of the VKontakte database, this is an old database of usernames and passwords, which fraudsters collected from 2011 to 2012. All the users mentioned in it changed their login information forcibly, ”
said VKontakte press secretary Yevgeny Krasnikov.
“For preventive purposes, we would like to remind VKontakte users about the inadmissibility of installing untested software on their devices, the ability to choose two-factor authentication in account settings, and also to prevent them from using simple, easily matched passwords,” he added.
