Samsung has
launched a small-size 512 GB SSD. These drives use the NVM Express (NVMe) interface. SSD is placed in the case of type BGA. The PM971-NVMe solid-state drives themselves are made in the form factor of the chip. New drives will be installed in electronic devices with high density layout. The size of this SSD is approximately equal in size to the postage stamp.
In a small package (20 * 16 * 1.5 mm) all three SSD components are located: NAND flash memory, DRAM cache memory and a controller. The company managed to place in the BGA 16 48-layer chips with a density of 256 Gbit V-NAND, a 20-nm LPDDR4 DRAM chip with a density of 4 Gbit and a controller. Interestingly, the mass of such a drive is only 1 gram. The size is not the only advantage of this SSD, it also surpasses the standard 2.5-inch drive with a SATA 6 Gb / s interface in speed.
So, the sequential read speed here is 1500 MB / s, the sequential write is 900 MB / s. In the case of random access operations, the performance reaches 190,000 IOPS in the case of reading and 150,000 in write mode.

The PM971-NVMe will ship with 128, 256 and 512 GB volumes. Shipment of new items begins this month, and miniature SSD will be sold around the world.

In March of this year, Samsung introduced another new product - 15 TB SSD. These are the most capacious solid-state drives today. It uses the Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface at 12 Gb / s, and SSD is positioned as a drive for premium storage systems. For such a hard core, the random read and write speed reaches 200,000 and 32,000 I / O operations per second (IOPS).

It was possible to achieve high storage capacity by combining 512 Samsung memory microchips with 256 Gbit V-NAND. The V-NAND or 3D NAND architecture provides the ability to overlay NAND cells on top of one another.
In the market of solid-state drives, there are more and more new products with high performance and relatively low price (this does not apply to SSD for the corporate segment). But, unfortunately, the cost of 1 GB of SSD capacity is still higher than the cost of 1 GB of the average hard disk capacity of the market.
