Dell explained its position on Open Source

In the past two weeks, the newly opened Idea Storm website, which serves as Dell's online book of proposals, has undergone a massive "raid" on Open Source visitors. During this time, they managed to advance to the very beginning of the queue of proposals to start selling Dell PCs with Linux OS preinstalled, Open Office office suite and other open source software, providing an alternative to computers equipped with Microsoft products.

The principle of the site involves a mandatory response to the most popular ideas of users, so that Dell was forced to respond to requests from Linux users. In a special section of the site, representatives of the company assured that they pay serious attention to all issues related to Open Source and understand that users want a more flexible product line.

However, not everything is so simple: there are at least a dozen popular Linux distributions and the company is not able to guarantee the stable operation of each of them on its hardware. And to choose one or even two of them - this means to scare away fans of other versions of the OS. However, for starters, Dell certified the OptiPlex (dexthop) series, Latitude (laptops), and Precision (powerful workstations) for compatibility with SUSE Linux from Novell.

But it so happened that most of the Open Source community understood this as a promise that very soon the computers of these lines will be equipped with open source software, which put Dell in an awkward position.

On Wednesday, according to Inquirer, the company issued a statement in which it clarified once again that certification for compatibility with Linux and the willingness to begin distributing it are not the same thing. But, as they say in a statement, Dell is only at the beginning of the road to expanding its work with Linux and in the future we need to wait for new news on this topic.

It is worth recalling that we recently wrote about the publication of some internal Microsoft documents, among which were plans to counteract the deepening cooperation between Dell and manufacturers of open source software.
