Sberbank recognizes you by sight (and by voice)

Plastic cards are a thing of the past

The largest bank in the Russian Federation is introducing technologies for identifying customers using biometric information, said the head of Sberbank German Gref. Currently there are two technologies: voice recognition (voice identification) and image recognition (identification by appearance). The bank management expects to introduce them within 2-3 years.

“These solutions, which bring the identification accuracy to 99.9%, are in a high degree of readiness,” said German Gref. We are talking about a new technology platform "18+", which is now being prepared by specialists of Sberbank.

“This is not only protection against fraud, but also convenience. You do not need to go anywhere, you do not need documents so that we identify your voice to perform any operation. In our new “18+” platform, the functionality of customer identification by palm is laid. We are now buying more and more ATMs with biometrics. Accordingly, as such, the map, whose main task is to identify, is a thing of the past. After the implementation of the “18+” platform, which is planned for 2018, the frequency of using the card as a payment instrument will begin to decline sharply. Banking will change dramatically, ”said the head of Sberbank.

Thus, in the near future, the need to use plastic cards with a pincode will disappear if the ATM begins to identify a person by palm print.

Voice identification is planned primarily for call centers to verify the identity of the client. It will be available in all regions and all customers. Limited testing is already underway in Moscow.

The technology even makes it possible to determine by voice if a person calls under duress or when fraudsters have taken over the information of clients of the older age category using social engineering methods, they write “Izvestia”, without revealing, however, the technical details of advanced algorithms.

Identification of customers by person is planned to be implemented in the branches of Sberbank, as well as in the field service of corporate customers.

While Sberbank is at the forefront of technological progress, other banks have so far considered the introduction of biometric technology to be premature. Even specialists of the Speech Technology Center (MDG) who develop voice identification systems do not consider the implementation period to be 2-3 years real. However, in the medium term, biometric identification will precisely replace plastic cards, they are sure.
