Russia's largest data center will receive energy from nuclear power plants

Kalinin NPP

Rosenergoatom started construction of the country's largest data center. The capacity of the data center on completion of construction will be about 80 MW, and the number of racks will reach 10,000. The data center is being built in the Tver region, near the Kalinin NPP. More specifically, the station will be located in the satellite city of Udomlya station.

The construction of the data center will be the company CHD Engineering, which provides turnkey operation, laying electricity, water supply, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plus builds even roads and other infrastructure facilities. 10% of the data center will be reserved for the needs of Rosenergoatom, and other companies will be able to rent out other facilities. Earlier, the state-owned company proposed to transfer the personal data of Russian-speaking users to its data center, due to the entry into force of the federal law on the storage of personal data in Russia.

It is possible that after the construction Rosenergoatom will centralize its currently distributed resources on this site. We are currently studying the possibility of connecting the data center directly to the power infrastructure of the station, in order to avoid the participation of intermediary structures. As for the Kalinin NPP, its capacity is about 4,000 MW, and now there is a certain surplus capacity that can be disposed of by connecting such a large energy consumer as a data center. Only to ensure the operation of servers will be spent about 36 MW, not to mention other systems.

“When located near an energy source, in this case with the power units of the station, companies have reduced costs and they are guaranteed to receive a source of energy. Financial costs are also reduced due to less remoteness from the source, ” said Sergey Novikov, director of the Rosatom communications department.

The first phase of the construction of the data center will be completed by March 2017. The completion of the second phase is the summer of 2018. The total cost of the entire project is about $ 975 million, excluding the cost of the IT infrastructure.

The number of commercial data centers in Russia, according to iKS-Consulting, reached 200. Over the past year, the volume of the data storage market in the country increased by 28%, up to 11.9 billion rubles. This year, according to experts, the market will continue to grow.
